ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on humanitarian response by international non-governmental organisations (iNGOs) to your local scout group and pretty much everything else in between. International development projects can be subdivided in many ways. One of the most common ways is whether the project is operational or if you implement the project through local partner organisations. Legitimacy sounds like a strange concept when related to project management. Most iNGO's and local NGO's need to identify sources of funding for most, if not all work they do. Project managers in NGO's need to have some advanced people management skills to make sure that stakeholder processes are well managed and kept alive. In 2007 a group of iNGOs met under the leadership of Learning in NGO's to discuss project management in the sector and the challenges described above. The outcome of this work was PMD Pro Project Management for Development Professionals. This is an APMG-supported certification focused on international development.
