ABSTRACT

The green city concept, and the management of the urban landscape, raises questions about the values of green environments in cities, and how these values can be articulated and developed. Landscape management applies two forms of knowledge in this respect: factual and procedural. Green urbanism has a long tradition as an environmental discourse that brings together ecological and urban perspectives. Views on human-environmental interactions and practical design are frequently discussed in landscape architecture theory. The various alternative approaches, apart from severe anthropocentrism in design, are relevant to our gardener's view. The perspective is used in the development of LandACT (Landscape architecture City Theory). The landscape architect's presence in city development, or the presence of his/her view, contributes to the long-term management and to sustainable urban development. Urban settings are seen as agglomerations in the wider landscape and design with nature in cities is a challenge, one which the local authorities of Oslo have met in several ways.
