ABSTRACT

The number of people employed in the library and information services (LIS) sector in Australia was estimated in 2006 at 28,000, of whom 13,000 were librarians, 5,000 library technicians, 7,000 library assistants, and 3,000 archivists or allied professionals. Hallam, using data supplied annually to the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) by Australian LIS schools during the course recognition requirements that ALIA uses as part of its quality assurance of education programmes. The Council of Australian University Libraries (CAUL) website notes some of the training opportunities its members find relevant. They include generic courses for managers in the tertiary education sector offered by Universities Australia and by the Association for Tertiary Education Management (ATEM). The post-qualification library training and development market in Australia is serviced by a very small number of dedicated niche providers, and a wider range of generic soft-skills providers exemplified by the Australian Institute of Management (AIM) and the Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA).
