ABSTRACT

National and vocational qualifications in the library and information world seem to have been in a continuous state of review and change in the last 20 years. A relatively straightforward offering of the Library and Information Certificate for Library Assistants and Chartership for Librarians has been shaken up and developed to enable it to keep up with other developments in qualifications. This has led to greater choice for employees and greater challenges for providers if they want to keep up with developments and ensure that the profession which is probably not known for its innovation stays in the forefront of development and offers relevant qualifications for the twenty-first century.
