ABSTRACT

This chapter talks about training for pedagogical development that must include development for traditional information skills teaching in formal education and also informal interaction through roving support in a library. An understanding of the theory of teaching and of learning enables teachers, trainers and learning facilitators to be more effective in their work. The nature of training and development for pedagogy clearly depends on the experience and needs of the learner. One starting point for the development of sound pedagogic practice is the development of effective presentation skills. If a teaching or learning event is to be successful, it needs to be well presented and understandable to the learners. The effectiveness of teaching can be measured through assessment but it should also include personal reflection informed by feedback from learners and other parties. The overall focus of any training for pedagogical development should be to develop effective and innovative teachers applying pedagogical theory within a framework of values.
