ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the Facilitating Information Literacy Education (FILE) course commissioned by London Health Libraries(LHL). In the UK the potential for interactive technologies and communication systems to create a professional workforce has long been associated with e-learning practices which identify information literacy as a necessary e-oriented skill. FILE adopts the Relational approach in its provision by starting with the basic pedagogical premise that information literacy is characterized by the relationship between learner and information. This concept is based on the phenomenographic perspective of learning which focuses on the relationship between subject and phenomenon. The precursor of FILE was developed as a pilot training the trainer's course commissioned by LHL as part of its Learner Support Programme (LSP) agenda. FILE offers an example of effective integration of continuing professional development (CPD) training within an academic environment. FILE is particularly important for information professionals operating in the health sector which is characterized by a culture of evidence-based medicine (EBM).
