ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the key medical workforce governance challenges faced by Indonesia, one of the largest and most populous developing countries in the world. Governance of the health workforce is an important and pressing issue internationally as demonstrated by major reports published by the World Health Organization (WHO), World Bank and in the United Kingdom (UK). The Ministry of Health, Indonesian Medical Council, Indonesian Medical Association, hospital directors, specialist associations, private health insurers, consumer organizations and researchers contributed to the research process. In the penultimate stage, findings were presented at meetings of the ICR-GHW and the International Association of Medical Regulatory Authorities in Capetown, the Annual Conference of the Doctor's Reform Society in Australia and the health governance research network, HealthGov. Public facilities include public hospitals, community health centres at sub-district level, community health sub-centres, mobile health centres, and integrated health posts.
