ABSTRACT

At most British universities, studying for a degree in Music consists largely of learning how to write about music, with students producing tens of thousands of words in the course of their studies. At the same time, developments in Web 2.0 technologies, such as the blog, the microblog or the wiki, allow us and our students to write about music in new ways and new genres. My chapter discusses how teachers and learners in higher education can work together in establishing links between new and emerging genres of writing about music, both in academic contexts and beyond, by analysing how new technologies force us to re-think three crucial issues in academic writing: the meanings of ‘reading’ and ‘writing’, the genres of academic writing and the genres of writing about music.
