ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses knowledge hubs in the German urban system in line with the idea of spatial hubs in networks of globalised economic activities. The distribution of and changes to knowledge hubs in Germany has been analyzed, having regard to the crucial importance of implicit knowledge for creating new economic processes. Two important questions from a geographical perspective are whether knowledge hubs are equally distributed in Germany or spatially concentrated, and how the spatial distribution changes over the course of time. Patterns relating to the importance of counties as a hub are identified on the basis of their importance as a place of knowledge-based services and as a link within networks of knowledge-based services. The relative changes in importance within the national urban system in Germany indicate that a city's size is neither the only nor the most important criterion that influences a city's attractiveness as a hub of knowledge-based services.
