ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we examine different human factors concepts associated with automation. In the automation field, aviation is one of the most salient and prominent applications; however, several other implementations will be touched on. Before arriving at the applications of automation in such sociotechnical systems, we must first have a firm grasp of the concept of automation and its fundamental theories and preliminary research that has been conducted in this field. This chapter will then provide a description of some common and relevant human factors methods and how these tools can be put into practice. To completely round out the topic of automation, we will close with an analysis of what is trending currently in the field and what can be expected in the years to come.
