ABSTRACT

This chapter provides the research on recovery from work stress and sums up how this research can help employees to stay healthy and fit. Trougakos and Hideg proposed Muraven and Baumeister's ego-depletion theory as a complementary limited resource perspective that is particularly useful for studying momentary recovery from work stress. According to the effort-recovery model, the expenditure of effort throughout the work day leads to load reactions such as fatigue or physiological activation which deplete an employee's energy resources. In a study on recovery during the weekend, Verena Hahn, Carmen Binnewies and Haun found that being absorbed in joint activities with the partner fostered employees' recovery experiences. Trougakos and Hideg proposed that the nature of work breaks and the activities employees engage in during the work breaks influence the levels of psychological resources, which in turn influence various workplace outcomes.
