ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the nexus of emotional intelligence and human frailty at work. It examines the two EI abilities: emotional awareness and emotional management which determine the usefulness of these abilities in solving real-world problems and addressing human frailty. In line with Shand, Ronald J. Burke notes that frailty both affects us internally and is manifested externally. In terms of understanding how emotional intelligence may be related to human frailty at work, it is useful to consider a concrete example outlined by Ashkanasy and Daus in terms of the cascading model. Emotional intelligence was proposed by Salovey and Mayer as a means to link thinking and feeling. In terms of Ego Depletion Theory, Baumeister and his colleagues argue that individuals engaging in emotion regulation eventually become 'tired', and their ability to regulate their emotions decreases and individuals show signs of faulty decision-making and counter-productive behaviour.
