ABSTRACT

This chapter has attempted to bring together a great deal of information related to the use of scale simulations in HRI research. The Team Performance Laboratory (TPL) at the University of Central Florida (UCF) has a reputation for finding low-cost alternatives to high-priced simulations for use in aviation, security, and military applications. Scientists at TPL have developed a research program which emphasizes the use of researchers from diverse backgrounds, including human factors psychology, modeling and simulation, computer science, and cognitive psychology, and with varying skill sets, to achieve common goals through diverse and interactive means. Military uses for robotic assets will include a wide range of mission types, from logistical solutions to march-to-contact assault missions, and it is important that our research at TPL reflects all of these possible mission tasks in our research. In addition, future research will explore greater and varying degrees of automation and computer assistance provided by robotic systems.
