ABSTRACT

A small brochure presents the prominent role Mimoza Nestorova-Tomić (1929) played in projects of national and international significance. The brochure was published in conjunction with the Andreja Damjanov national award for Macedonian Architecture that is given to an individual who has made a significant contribution to national architecture culture, which she received in 2011. Most notably Mimoza Nestorova-Tomić was closely involved in the post 1963 earthquake reconstruction of Skopje when she worked alongside Kenzo Tange, and his team, on the development of their 1965 master plan entry for the United Nations-sponsored competition to rebuild this city. 1 Extended periods in Western Europe and the United States to learn about new architecture shaped Mimoza Nestorova-Tomić into an informed and cosmopolitan figure within the Macedonian context. Subsequent work in Skopje enabled her to launch her career, and from 1986 to 1989 she became director of the Institute of Planning and Architecture in Skopje (ITPA), the most important state position in architecture. The brochure is a rare record of what she achieved, and a claim for a singular narrative of the architect as individual agent, differentiated, if not heroically bestowed, from the collective neutrality of socialist ideology.
