ABSTRACT

Good communication is one solution to nearly all of a virtual team's problems, yet at the same time it is the biggest obstacle the members face. The team's communication strategy should also involve the development of the process by which the team members access their information. Both small successes and major milestones should be recognized both internally and externally to build motivation and team spirit. The use of electronic communication tools has fuelled interest in finding a way of storing and then re-using the knowledge that virtual teams are generating. Virtual teams, by their nature, connect islands of knowledge that may be distributed globally. Even sharing information within a virtual team environment can be a sufficient challenge in itself, however. The ability to store and re-use such knowledge would allow learning from similar projects to improve the process next time around. Successful knowledge management is not just a matter of implementing complex and clever computer systems.
