ABSTRACT

The uncharted territory of virtual working brings with it requirements for new and varied skills in technology use, collaboration and distributed teamworking. The team members will have been chosen to participate in the project on the basis of their personal experiences, expertise and competence. The training plans for team members should be worked out not only to deliver immediate benefits to the team, but also to build the abilities of the employee as a resource for the company on future assignments and to support individual personal development. The best training develops skills and the related underpinning knowledge, which in turn—through the process and content of training—changes people's attitudes. The training programme should integrate the technical and social training such that they are seen as being strongly related. For the start-up of virtual teams within an organization, there are several companies specializing in training in their new ways of working.
