ABSTRACT

In this chapter we start with the outline programme of measures for an Integral Green Slovenian Economy as designed in 2013. A new concept of “smart integration of European Union (EU) policies for sustainable development” is presented and explained. Sustainable development is described with four dimensions (environment, economy, society and culture), and emphasis on values of social responsibility is added. Various EU policies are reflected in the good practices presented in previous chapters, demonstrating that smart integration already works in practice.

In accordance with the concept of smart integration the argument is made that the green sectorial programming through instruments developed in the EU constitutes the basis for sustainability and social responsibility in Slovenia and becomes its important underpinning. Under certain conditions, these instruments (such as Strategic Environmental Assessment) can also become efficient tools for supporting integral green economy goals. It is stressed that new tools for measuring development and social development are required, as well as systematic analytical work for the further development of the Integral Green Slovenia programme.
