ABSTRACT

Titon du Tillet stated that Couperin's Pieces de Clavecin was 'd'un gout nouveau' in a new style and this is exactly what he said of the playwright Dufresny. Titon du Tillet said that he understood music perfectly and his lively portraits of almost all the different characteristics of mankind were 'd'un gout nouveau'. Couperin makes many references to Dufresny in his Pieces de Clavecin. He describes specific moments in his plays, in musical terms, in L'Himen-amour and La Pantomime. He refers to Dufresny's Les Amusemens serieux et comiques in Les Amusemens and in Les Vieux Seigneurs and Les Jeunes Seigneurs, Cy-devant les petitsMaitres. Nicolas Grandval reportedly stated that these new interludes were by Couperin, and since he had played the harpsichord in court entertainments, he was perhaps in a position to know. Every one of Couperin's allemandes has its own particular character, the character of the subject being portrayed.
