ABSTRACT

In 2007, the European Parliament (EP) invented the Agora. It is a two-day event where representatives of European civil society come together in Brussels to deliberately discuss current and pressing problems of the European Union (EU). The results of the Agora are intended to serve as an input in the decision-making process of the EU Parliament. The Agora is inspired by the ideals of deliberative democracy. Up until now, the EP has organized three Agoras, the first in 2007, the second in 2008, and the third in 2011. In this chapter, the second Agora, which took place in 2008, is evaluated from the perspective of deliberative theory. It shows the analysis of Agora's group composition. The Agora 2008 started with a plenary session for all participants. During the opening session of the Agora, representatives of European Institutions informed the participants of their current work on climate change.
