ABSTRACT

The Islamic Prophet Stories, Qisas al-anbiya', are found in the Quran, and also elsewhere. They are included and expanded in collections of narratives of the prophets' lives, found in many versions up to the present day. In most of them the life story (sira) of Prophet Muhammad is included at the end of the collection. Many stories are also referred to in exegetical literature (tafsir). Of the highest importance in Muslim tradition, the prophet stories are both well suited to and highly valued as narrative to be recounted to children in the context of family, school and mosque. As the central figures of such stories, the prophets obviously constitute an important part of the tradition exposed to 'memory and forgetfulness' among Muslims.
