ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the influence of sound leadership and good governance on national development. It begins with a definition of leadership and a discussion of the leadership challenge facing developing nations. This is followed by a description of the various styles of leadership and their advantages and disadvantages. Next, the principles and features of good governance are explored. Also addressed are the concept of national development and the challenges faced by developing countries as they make concerted efforts to achieve growth and advancement in various areas of their economies. In this regard, the role of culture in national development is also highlighted. Relevant examples of effective leadership and good governance as well as lessons to be learnt from these examples are presented throughout the discussions. To conclude, the implications of the findings for national leaders, policy makers and practitioners of development are discussed with their appropriate recommendations for all stakeholders aspiring to see their nations make significant strides towards national development.
