ABSTRACT

Thanks to their work in the World Council of Churches, many great Orthodox theologians have become known outside the Orthodox community. Georges Florovosky made an important contribution to the preparations for the first General Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Amsterdam in 1948. John Meyendorff was the chairman of Faith and Order. Nikos Nissiotis was for many years a member of the central committee of the World Council of Churches. This group of Orthodox leaders in the ecumenical movement also includes Metropolitan Emilianos Timiadis of Silivria, who was the emissary of the patriarchate of Constantinople in Western Europe for most of his active ministry (1959–84).
