ABSTRACT

This chapter examines some of the places and events chosen for cultural heritage tourism, and how, in the process of becoming part of the tourism landscape, these places may aid in the construction of a collective Mauritian memory. It identifies some of the issues confronting Mauritius as it struggles to develop a more concise national identity. The chapter also shows how expanding the tourism product to include more aspects of Mauritius cultural heritage is aiding in the strengthening of an integrative Mauritian nation. Cultural heritage tourism projects have the potential to raise awareness of Mauritian national identity through shared pasts and make additional progress in identifying what it means to be Mauritian. However, further development of national identity and national pride can benefit tourism and vice versa as is demonstrated by the examples of the Martello tower and Aapravasi Ghat.
