ABSTRACT

The concept of leadership Eric describes comes from his commander and spreads out to the officers. This chapter speaks about the humility of Eric and what he has learned to life for the readers. It is the insignificant moments that create such beauty and powerful messages. Eric's mentor recognized the increasing pace of police work, and chose to educate himself in order to increase skills, knowledge, and ability in his profession. One of the first themes that emerge in the narrative is Eric's discussion of the "older officers" teaching him through example and demonstration. Eric talks about the older offers giving him attention, and says, "any attention is better than no attention". However, some can feel an excessive need for approval, and so spend large amounts of time and energy seeking it. This is unhelpful, stressful, and can drain their resilience. Eric's mentor had a tremendous effected on Eric's values.
