ABSTRACT

Police leadership throws you into many challenging situations, many of which test your personal limits, and many of which create ethical dilemmas. There are often many conflicting pressures, tight timescales, and a mixture of short-term imperatives and long-term considerations. You are aware that your decisions and actions will be subject to much scrutiny and questioning by a range of different interests. They may be picked over in the cold light of day many years after, and with the great benefit of hindsight, or a very different mindset. There are often conflicts between what is the right thing to do for an individual and what may be the wider organizational interest. You may be under pressure to avoid admitting liability, to preserve the reputation of the organization, or to establish or maintain a principle.
