ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the impact of this global role on London's society, culture and industry and also examines the impact of the recession and discusses London's future trajectory as an entrepreneurial city and as capital of the United Kingdom. It discusses the genesis of the credit crunch and the resulting global recession. The chapter explores the structural problems which emerged in London from the collapse of the market-oriented, national model of productive growth and social development. It provides insights into immigration and the provision of energy, education, transport, housing and health, and explores current provision in the context of London as both a global city and an unbalanced economy. The chapter draws upon the arguments presented by contributors to make the case for new approaches to understanding the urban economy.
