ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the voluminous transport debate. London certainly groans under the weight of various strategies claiming transport will help create 'the best big city on earth'. The most recent Travel in London report compiled by Transport for London (TfL), the growth of slow modes such as walking and cycling is highlighted as a major achievement. In urban infrastructure and across construction as a whole, a web of state-capital linkages has been created, including the much-criticised Private Finance Initiatives (PFI) and associated Public Private Partnerships (PPP), but also extending to the wider integration of the private sector with public commissions. To achieve a transport system befitting London in the twenty-first century, there needs to be clarity of purpose in transport, starting with a restatement of the benefits of travel and a campaign to win support for freedom of movement and increased mobility.
