ABSTRACT

Higher education is an important industry in London and performs a significant role in its economy, attracting UK based and overseas students to diverse institutions. This chapter examines recent developments and. in particular, focuses upon higher education policy and the move towards the establishment of a quasi-market for higher education, before turning to issues around the capacity of the sector to sustain its international reputation and to provide educational opportunities for an expanding younger population living in relatively deprived areas, particularly of East London.
