ABSTRACT

This chapter examines several aspects of the past, present, and future role of Taiwan in a variety of South China Sea issues. It begins by considering the objectives and accomplishments of the track-two informal diplomacy initiative “Managing Potential Conflicts in the South China Sea.” It goes on to investigate the appropriate role for Taiwan in the larger question of South China Sea ocean governance, and concludes with suggestions as to how all governing authorities bordering those waters should proceed in the interests of human security, marine environmental protection and preservation, the preservation of biological diversity, and the appropriate exploitation of living and non-living resources.
