ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the question of the homogenisation of the European public sphere (EPS) is addressed by taking two steps. First, it discloses what journalists in different European countries think about their audience and what the role of media is in delivering European Union (EU) news to citizens in national countries. While focusing on European reporting specifics which are emerging in different journalistic cultures, this step also highlights examples of commonalities of political EU reporting which are appearing across Europe. Second, the chapter proposes that signs of European journalism could emerge at least through two frameworks: in rich and international working environment in Brussels, on the one hand, or, on the other, through wider use by journalists of varied news sources. It is important to consider the competence of journalists to report on the EU by discussing respondent's answers from the following three perspectives: knowledge, reporting skills and values.
