The Making of Muslim Youth Cultures in Europe book
Around 5.00 p.m. one of the central halls of the town hall of Amsterdam gradually fills with invited people. It is a very diverse audience. There are young Muslim men and women dressed as young executives, some wearing headscarves in fashionable colours. We see well-known central figures of ‘Islamic Netherlands’, such as representatives of organizations, ‘opinion leaders’, politicians. In addition there are numerous invited non-Muslims. There are official and non-official representatives of other religions; there are some local and some national politicians. There are people who are in one way or another connected to the ‘Dutch Islamic scene’, like myself. And there is, last but not least, the mayor of Amsterdam.
