Introduction

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book explores different ways in which Messiaen left an imprint on musical life. It scrutinizes aspects of his own compositional technique in terms of counterpoint, spectralism and later piano music, while the second charts ways in which Messiaen's influence is manifest in the music and careers of Ohana, Xenakis, and Murail and Quebecois composers. The book provides case studies of Messiaen's reception: general reception in Italy and Spain, a geological and personal odyssey about Mount Messiaen in the USA, and the view thus far of his posthumous Traité de rythme, de couleur, et d'ornithologie. Since his death, Messiaen's output has become increasingly prominent in musical life. Part of the growth in acceptance and recognition undoubtedly stems from the 2008 centennial celebrations, but the worldwide exposure the prompted seems only to have increased programming and recording of his music.
