ABSTRACT

In Gaza, I witnessed indelible images of destruction, listened to painful experiences of demoralizing violence and was astounded by the pervasive poverty as well as the poor health conditions of many of the people I met. I also acquired edifying lessons in survival, resilience and resistance that simultaneously filled me with hope and dread. What I witnessed in Palestine was more shocking than all I had read, heard and seen about the precarious nature of the lives of refugees and of the struggles of generations of civilians enduring an oppressive military occupation.
