ABSTRACT
This chapter examines the research literature on child abduction. It draws primarily on UK studies together with select research from overseas where the findings have relevance to the UK context. The first section offers a review of the definitions of child abduction and the broader conceptual basis. The second section summarises the available data on the extent of abduction. Types of family and nonfamily abduction are highlighted in the third section, followed by a discussion of the implications for response and prevention.
