ABSTRACT

Grace supervised twelve PhD students and one MPhil, of whom five former students and four mentees responded to her emails. Many academics are paid to be mentors, either, and sometimes both, to undergraduates and graduate students. While engagements such as the above two led to doctoral studentships, there are of course other ways of providing practical support. The way in which Grace provided opportunities for all of her students was a strong reoccurring theme. As a doctoral student, Grace Davie created various opportunities for me, which expanded author horizons both experientially and academically. Grace provided a sounding board for issues relating to the challenges of combining an academic career with motherhood. Nevertheless, Grace was willing to listen and advise on how to juggle intensive and sometimes conflicting demands, reminding her that family always comes first. It is this last aspect of guidance that author think is worth emphasizing the most.
