ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights considerations for professionals who provide therapy for first- generation and second-generation former cult members. Some individuals who believe they have been harmed by their involvement in a destructive cult and who are experiencing difficulties in their post-cult lives seek therapy with author. The chapter employs an integrated approach that utilizes both psycho-education and psychodynamic psychotherapy. It focuses on the specific manner in which the group's use of influence interacted with and affected the personality dynamics of each of the clients. The chapter addresses the mechanics of the therapy process and describes how this will unfold in the future and also address potential transference issues, common post-cult problems, and focus upon the individual's strengths. A goal of therapy is to help former cult members become more able to tolerate their uncomfortable human feelings and to feel more confident about their potential ability to successfully manage their life.
