ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on the mutable concept of utopia's inextricable symbiosis with revolution. Since Thomas More's detailed account of a perfect society was first published in 1516 in his influential Utopia there seems always to be something unnerving about the concept of utopia and the slipperiness of its proximity to dystopia. Utopia tells the story of a mysterious place and its inhabitants, as relayed by the fictional character Raphael, who, it is said, spent some time on the crescent-shaped island called Utopia, a name taken from the Greek ou topos, meaning no place'. Debord's critique of modern urbanism came in repudiation of Corbusier's utopian blueprint for a city, its complicity with capitalism and its pseudo community that follows the isolated individual right into the family cell'. When Nieuwenhuys deployed automation to liberate New Babylonians from work, his intentions were similar to those of more, who used slaves to save Utopian citizens from the terrible realities of war and other violence.
