ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the research conducted to date on psychosocial and organizational factors in relation to safety in the oil and gas industry, with a specific emphasis on research conducted on the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS). The concept of safety culture provides a useful framework to consider the psychosocial and organizational factors in relation to safety performance, however issues relating to health and the working environment are also considered. The chapter examines the price in relation to the health and safety of people working in the sector, particularly in relation to the offshore oil and gas industry in the UK. The chapter concludes with suggestions as to where the industry should be headed in the future and some of the issues that need to be addressed to enable the future sustainability of the oil and gas sector in terms of health and safety.
