ABSTRACT

Drug use in Britain has undergone drastic changes and these trends reflect impact of many factors. Statistics from Crime Survey for England and Wales and Scottish Crime and Justice Survey characterize the prevalent nature and extent of drug use amongst different ethnic groups in Britain. In Britain, cannabis is the most commonly used illicit drug. Illicit drugs used by Black Africans are cocaine powder, heroin, crack cocaine, ecstasy and amphetamines. The failure of social citizenship generally in relation to the Black African community is reflected in the failure of government agencies. The involvement of Blacks in the trafficking of drugs into Britain has featured considerably in public discourse. A significant number of Jamaican women become drug couriers because of declining economic situation. To improve Black access to drug treatment services, research has identified the need for statutory organizations to raise awareness of drug information. Invariably, the level of Black community trust in drug treatment service providers will improve.
