ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the prevalent conditions under which Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) methods were used to collect information from survivors regarding the extent of human deaths and injuries caused by Cyclone Sidr. It explores how to immigrate both legally and illegally to the United States. The chapter presents an application of participatory research methods in a post disaster context. It discusses the methods utilized to collect information on the circumstances that caused deaths and injuries during Cyclone Sidr, which made landfall across the southwestern coast of Bangladesh. The chapter explains the challenges confronted by the methods employed and how these challenges were overcome. Despite alleged shortcomings of participatory methodology as a tool for data collection, this methodology was employed in order to collect relevant data quickly, cheaply, and effectively with no significant reduction in reliability. Applications of participatory methodologies to record victim assessments in a post disaster situation in Bangladesh have not received much attention among hazard researchers.
