ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes China's role in peace and security regime building in Northeast Asia by looking at the issues that are involved in this process and how they are related to China. It assumes that China will have its own options and what it opts for would considerably affect Northeast Asian peace and security regime building. Building a security regime in Northeast Asia is relatively recent development. China is crucial to creating any peace regime premised on the successful denuclearization of the Korean peninsula. Geneva Conference which was held in 1954 lasted for 51 days and discussed the Korea issue among the 19 countries that fought in the 1950-1953 Korean War. Four-way talks were much easier to communicate with the US and the Republic of Korea (ROK) than with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). The spokesman stressed that China is a country that has considerable influence in Northeast Asia and is an important signatory of the armistice agreement.
