ABSTRACT

A subcategory of Knowledge Management (KM) that potentially addresses this interest is Personal Knowledge Management (PKM). Organizations generally have formal sets of rules that govern their functioning as a system. Such an approach, however, risks confining PKM to the technological perspective of KM. The discussion that follows takes a multidisciplinary approach by applying a theory developed in the area of Systems Research Systems Intelligence (SI) to PKM. In doing so it also attempts to bridge the division between the technological and organic perspectives of KM, by illustrating that PKM is as much concerned with social and communication skills as it is with interacting with technological systems. The strength of SI as a theory lies in its combining of the structure and holistic perspective of systems thinking with an emphasis on the abilities and responsibilities of a person. It thus provides a particularly useful lens through which to consider PKM.
