ABSTRACT

Critical geography has a distinct meaning in each and every context where it has developed. There are general elements that overlap, but there are also characteristics that are contrasting and differentiate each approach. Among these elements it is possible to identify the historical development of geography itself as a discipline in different countries, especially how epistemological reflection has evolved in the various nation-states and how this evolution has been expressed in geographical research and thought in different times and contexts. Likewise it is necessary to differentiate between the conditions of critical geography as a rebellious representation of the reality lived in a given country, and the development of what is a critical element within the scientific discipline of geography and its institutionalization in each Latin American nation.
