ABSTRACT
This chapter outlines the key changes to marine governance that have been introduced through marine management processes, and explores how these are given practical effect in a Northern Ireland context. It evaluates the impact of these changes in terms of facilitating integrated marine planning in Northern Ireland. Integrated management is outlined in the first instance, followed by an account of the fragmented nature of marine governance in Northern Ireland. Integrated management is typically considered to have at least two key dimensions: a vertical dimension and a horizontal dimension. Sectoral integration is concerned with the integration of specific sectoral policies with other policy domains and their actors within a defined space. The chapter discusses the new marine governance regime. It concludes with an assessment of what this regime means in terms of integrated marine planning in Northern Ireland.
