ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the significance of Third Eye Blind's debut recording by noting its dark and subversive subject matter as well as its unique acts structure and lasting relevance in the punk and indie community. Ultimately, Third Eye Blind decided to sign a recording contract with Elektra Entertainment Group, as a result of the high degree of artistic control that the label promised. However, identifying the album as having three acts does not mean that it strictly follows the traditional story-telling structure of Hollywood films. Similar to the grunge movement from which catchy alternative rock bands such as Third Eye Blind were born, it is not intended to be uplifting. Third Eye Blind concludes with four songs that are slower in tempo and often use quiet-loud-quiet dynamics for emotional effect. Third Eye Blind experienced while releasing music during a season of change in the music industry, the album was the group's last release with Elektra.
