ABSTRACT

This chapter explains the prevention of digital crimes that is related to gaining unlawful access to systems and networks through circumventing control mechanisms. Situational crime prevention theory provides an alternative approach to crime prevention, but compared with general deterrence theory it places more emphasis on defending the target than deterring the attacker. As one of the main architects of situational crime prevention theory, Ronald V Clarke explained, it is focused on the settings for crime, rather than upon those committing criminal acts. Many governments have developed cyber-security strategies in response to the perceived risks presented by digital crime, particularly cyber crime. The chapter considers some of the technological means by which criminal activities can be prevented. Many digital crimes are committed through vulnerabilities resulting from human fallibility, and only some of these people problems can be addressed by technological solutions.
