ABSTRACT

Granada is the United Kingdom's ITV contractor for the North West of England and the only one of the original four Independent Television Authority (ITA) franchises that has endured into the twenty-first century. The vibrant television career of Johnny Hamp displays an impressive range of associations, from the early days of the Beatles to the later days of The Comedians and The Wheel tappers And Shunters Social Club. This chapter explains that by 1963 jazz, blues, folk and R&B acolytes had already organised themselves into clubs and societies with their own networks, journals, promoters and even occasional record labels creating events, venues and scenes that allowed them to hear such sounds simultaneously, and to develop a perceived unity. The Blues and Gospel Train did not feel obliged to include an accompanying ethno-musicological discourse, or an older TV presenter getting down with the kids.
