ABSTRACT

This chapter describes population ageing in Lithuania and to demonstrate the challenges that it poses for existing attitudes towards older people. It concentrates on the demographic aspects of the past and present of population ageing in Lithuania. The chapter focuses on describing the level of population ageing, changes in absolute numbers of older population age groups, their gender and territorial distribution. To better understand the fundamental character of the population ageing process, the chapter discusses the drivers and the pace of population ageing, as well as the multifaceted challenges that this process poses. It explores how Lithuanian society needs not only economic transformation, but more importantly adoption of new attitudes towards older persons. The chapter focuses on one of many challenges of population ageing the attitude towards old age and the elderly. It summarizes survey results concerning the representation of the elderly in Lithuanian media.
