ABSTRACT

Ageing as a demographic process consists of the increase in the percentage and absolute number of older persons in a given population. The population of Romania is ageing; this process is accelerated by international labour migration. During the last few decades, Romania has undergone important changes to the age structure of its population, but there have also been significant political transformations. The first international migrants came from ethnic minorities in Romania like ethnic Hungarians and ethnic Germans who had stronger ties with Western Europe. The main cause of demographic ageing is the transition from traditional reproduction of the population, characterized by high birth and mortality rates, to the modern situation with low birth and mortality rates. The international labour migration of Romanian citizens started about 15 years ago. In the past few years, some sociological studies have tried to estimate the size and volume of migration.
