ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights an institutional information management perspective with a focus on port logistics aspects and explains the implementation of smart ports from a functional information management perspective. It focuses on information systems for establishing a port-centric information management aiming to integrate and utilise information from different port operation areas. The promising concept of a smart port offers new opportunities to improve the efficiency, flexibility, collaboration, and safety in port processes through an economic and efficient utilisation of information. This requires inter-organisational port-centric information management laying the foundation for an efficient coordination of port processes and actors as well as for supporting decision making and business intelligence in the age of digitalisation. The chapter presents a framework for port-centric information management to categorise and explain the current and future use of information technologies (IT) and information systems in ports.
